South LA Home Water-Risk Profiler

The biggest drivers here are 1950s and 60s slab tract homes with original galvanized-steel plumbing, a concrete slab that hides copper supply lines, coastal marine-layer humidity, dense multi-unit buildings, and winter atmospheric-river storms that overwhelm street drains. Older homes near a channel carry the most risk.

A slab leak is a leak in a water line running under your concrete foundation. Post-war South LA homes were built on slabs with copper lines that corrode over decades, so a warm spot on the floor, a spiking water bill, or the sound of running water can all point to one. The slab leak page explains the signs in detail.

Know where your main water shut-off is, check washing-machine and dishwasher hoses each year, clear yard and street drains before winter, and consider a repipe if you still have original galvanized plumbing. If water does get in, fast extraction and drying limit the damage.

If it is safe, shut the water off at the main, stay off the wet floor, keep clear of outlets, and call. If the water is a sewer or street backup, do not touch it, it is Category 3 black water. The dispatcher talks you through the rest while a crew is on the way.
